Tennyson's poem about the courage of these soldiers was published just six weeks after the event. The Light Brigade was not destroyed, but many of the men were killed, wounded, or taken prisoner. Due to miscommunication and other errors, they were sent to attack a different Russian unit, one which immediately shot back at them. The Light Brigade was a British cavalry unit that expected to be sent to prevent Russian forces from removing captured Turkish guns. The Charge of the Light Brigade took place at the Battle of Balaclava, during the Crimean War, in October 1854.
